Dog Guides Narcolepsy Sufferer to Overcome Challenges

I’m excited to share that Quinn and I were recently featured in Vernon Morning Star! The article, titled “Dog Guides Narcolepsy Sufferer to Overcome Challenges,” dives into how my life and work have transformed since Quinn came into my world. It also highlights my journey with narcolepsy, my book Don’t Snooze Your Dreams, and the advocacy work I’m passionate about.

Living with narcolepsy isn’t easy—it’s a neurological disorder that disrupts the brain’s ability to maintain a normal sleep-wake cycle. Imagine battling sleep attacks or intense exhaustion in moments when you least expect it. The journey to diagnosis can take up to 15 years, which was true for me, too. I first started experiencing symptoms in my teens, but I didn’t receive a diagnosis until I was 22. Facing this disorder has been challenging, but it’s also what pushed me to pursue an unconventional path. Realizing that I needed flexibility, I started my own business, Venture Creative Collective, and have since become an entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and now an author.

My book, Don’t Snooze Your Dreams, is a memoir and a self-help guide to overcoming life’s obstacles, where I share practical strategies that anyone facing adversity can use. In my story, where I mention narcolepsy, many readers find it mirrors their own struggles—whether with health issues, self-doubt, or setbacks. My hope is that readers feel empowered to work towards their dreams, no matter what they’re up against.

But a huge part of my ability to live the life I have today is thanks to my service dog, Quinn. She’s more than a companion; she’s the reason I haven’t fallen asleep in public since we’ve been together—a particularly empowering and necessary thing, especially for women. The independence she provides me is life-changing, and I know that having access to a trained service dog isn’t something that everyone can afford. That’s why I also advocate for awareness around guide dogs and the barriers to obtaining one, especially in communities where access may be limited.

Quinn’s become a bit of a star herself, even making an appearance in a Mr. Beast YouTube short that has racked up over 124 million views! It’s wild to think how much awareness our story has raised already. I’ve had so many people tell me how hearing about my journey has impacted them, and I feel incredibly grateful for that.

If you’re in Vernon, I’m hoping to speak there soon! I would be grateful for introductions to companies and event planners you may know in British Columbia.

My grandparents live in the area, so it’s a place close to my heart. Thank you to everyone who has supported Quinn and me along the way—our journey is just getting started, and I look forward to sharing more of it with all of you.

With gratitude,
Michelle
